Babcock Community Care Centre News – August 8, 2025

Armchair travel is an exciting adventure to a place you might have never heard of, let alone travelled to. Residents are happy to hop on the magic train ride and travel to destinations such as Hawaii, Australia along with a variety of other countries. They also enjoy playing challenging games such as charades, Connect 4, Snakes and Ladders, virtual trivia, Mind Busters, Jeopardy, shell games, sling hockey, brain games, Wheel of Words, Family Feud, balloon toss, matching game and finally several games of bingo each week.

Despite the heat wave everyone appreciated the few classic car owners who graciously drove their cars to the parking area and had them on display for everyone to view. Residents had lots of questions about the vehicles and picked out their favourites. Special thanks to volunteers who assisted and for all the donated prizes. Don and Bonnie Cook provided the entertainment for the event.

A small group of residents, along with staff and volunteers, travelled to Parks Blueberries for a delicious lunch. Everyone had a great time. The Men’s club gathered in the activity area for a special meal and social time. They all enjoyed each other’s company and the delicious French toast with ham and cheese, or a Monte Cristo sandwich. Later in the week the Women’s club met and requested the Monte Cristo sandwich for their lunch. They had great conversation as they enjoyed their meal. The cooking group decided to make pizzelles, a thin wafer that looked like a large snowflake. They cooked these in their new baking press .After drizzling chocolate syrup over them they held a social time and were pleased how great they tasted.

Alan and Lois Woolner had a great time with family and friends at their 67th Anniversary party. The July birthday party was held with Randy Grey providing the entertainment. July birthday wishes are extended to Gord Gregory, John Marshall, Eugene Kaminski, and Maria Baptista. The Resident Council and Food Committee meetings were held in the activity area with several residents in attendance. Their discussions included requests for special foods they liked, the new building progress and how they appreciated the activity programs in place.

The one-on-one visits are appreciated by residents. This visit several asked to have their glasses cleaned and other little tasks around their room they wanted done. Craft programs are always fun with several residents in attendance. They make wreaths, and also a variety of art decorations to display on the hallway bulletin board. Many of our residents are very talented when it comes to deciding on craft designs. Catholic Communion was held in the activity area twice this month with David Skipper and Mary Lou DePelsmaeker officiating.

Residents gathered to watch the aerial view of the new building and their future home. They had several questions about the new facility. Banana splits on the patio were a great hit. Another special treat, in such hot weather, was having a Popsicle dipping station. There was a variety of Popsicle flavours they dipped in warm chocolate syrup, whip cream and sprinkles. They were a great, tasty addition.

The Tuck Shop cart made its way around the building. Several purchased the new art bookmarks. Wanda Hazelwood and friends visited and entertained residents with music and depicted bible stories by flannel graph. Residents enjoyed their visit. Mocktails with strawberry daiquiris and pina coladas were served at the Blended Bliss Social. Special thanks to CD Creative Concepts for donating their Balloon Buddies to our residents.

The reading group gathered in the activity area to catch up on local news and read a biography on the writer of “Marley and Me.” Thanks to Wardsville Golf Club for donating golf balls to our craft group. It is very much appreciated. The Civic holiday weekend was very busy. Residents indulged in a variety of delicious homemade cookies and cupcakes purchased at Union Bakery in Dresden. Residents are enjoying their outdoor walks or strolls along the village streets now that the weather is cooler.

Pet therapy is a fun time for the animal lovers at our home. Remy and Sybil, and Tigger and Wendy always bring joy to everyone during their visits. Happy birthday to Kay Cowan, she is celebrating her birthday in August. Deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of the late Frances Bell and James McFarlane. Babcock Community welcomes Darlene McGall and Shirley Lumley as our newest residents.
